An Innovative Approach for Improving Writing in Higher Education

Quill.org, a leading AI-powered nonprofit dedicated to improving literacy and critical thinking skills, is expanding its impact in higher education with the support of Axim Collaborative.

With a mission to help more than 10 million low-income students annually become proficient readers, writers, and critical thinkers, Quill has already reached eleven million K-12 students and numerous post-secondary learners since its founding, and hundreds of millions of student responses are scored each year through Quill. Recognizing the urgent need for stronger writing support at the college level, particularly in community colleges, Quill is taking a strategic step forward. Axim’s funding will enable Quill to pilot a targeted initiative focused on first-year composition courses, a crucial academic milestone that sets students up for long-term success in college and their careers.

This collaboration is designed to bridge the gap in college preparedness, as research indicates that only 32% of students enter higher education with the necessary academic skills to succeed. Through a structured pilot program, Quill will partner with a community college to implement and evaluate its adaptive learning tools in first-year English composition courses. The pilot will assess student writing improvements through pre- and post-diagnostic assessments, surveys, classroom observations, and instructor feedback. By leveraging data-driven insights, Quill will refine its offerings to better serve the unique needs of college students, ensuring they gain the writing proficiency necessary for academic and professional advancement.

Beyond direct student impact, Quill’s work through this partnership will generate a comprehensive case study to guide future implementations of its platform in community colleges nationwide. Quill will disseminate key findings through academic conferences, community college networks, and strategic partnerships, expanding the program’s reach and effectiveness. The initiative will support students at a critical juncture in their academic journeys.

By integrating Quill’s evidence-based writing tools into higher education, we are working together to create sustainable, scalable solutions that empower students and educators alike.
