AI for Learning Network (AI4LN)
Generative AI has the potential to transform work, teaching, and learning, presenting new opportunities and challenges for educators. Faculty need support to effectively use AI tools in classrooms, but current training and workshops are too-often limited to well-resourced institutions and often focus on high-level concepts rather than practical use. There is a pressing need for professional development (PD) for two-year college faculty to enhance their AI teaching skills and prepare students for AI-driven careers.
Axim is partnering with CMU’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI) and College of the Canyons (COC), which in turn are engaging California Community Colleges, SUNY OER Services (SOS), and UNCF to develop PD materials and a credential for instructors at two-year institutions, including HBCUs. The project will create training on using LLMs and generative AI tools, develop modules with faculty input, and explore their impact on course design and student learning. A cohort of 20+ faculty from broad-access institutions will help co-design, test, and promote these materials. The materials will be openly licensed to broaden access and offered with a recognized credential.
Investing in professional development to build institutional capacity is complementary to our investment in development of AI tools, and will increase the impact these tools and technology will have on student success.
